On August 1, 2024, the Knee Preservation Surgery Department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was officially established at the Huilongguan Campus of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. Li Yumei, Secretary of the Party Committee of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, Jiang Xieyuan, President, and Jiang Chunyan, Vice President, together with the heads of the hospital office, medical department, nursing department, outpatient department and related clinical departments, attended the department’s establishment ceremony, which was presided over by Vice President Jiang Chunyan.

Back to the beginning of the establishment of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital in 1956, the orthopedic surgery department only included two departments: trauma orthopedics and orthopedics. Later, with the development of orthopedic disciplines and professional subdivision, bone tumor departments, pediatric orthopedics, hand surgery, spine surgery, sports medicine and foot and ankle surgery were successively added to meet the treatment needs of different patients. As a new member of the orthopedic surgery system of Jishuitan Hospital, Knee Preservation Surgery is the ninth department established. Its emergence is based on the continuous exploration and progress of the step-by-step treatment of knee joint diseases, aiming to provide patients with more accurate and effective treatment plans.
Knee Preservation Surgery carries the nearly 40 years of exploration of knee preservation in Jishuitan Hospital. Although it seemed like a faint starlight at the beginning, the fire of this inheritance has not been extinguished, but has gradually become a prairie fire. In the past decade, with the vigorous development of modern knee preservation technology internationally, Jishuitan Hospital has pioneered the integration of a variety of advanced knee preservation technologies, such as unicompartmental knee replacement, peri-knee osteotomy, arthroscopy, biological therapy, external fixator technology, etc., with the needs of Chinese patients for daily life and labor. It was the first in China to propose the concept of stepped knee preservation treatment and has widely disseminated this advanced concept and technology across the country. After more than ten years of unremitting efforts and hard work, it has achieved remarkable results.
President Jiang Xieyuan’s profound exposition at the 2024 Asian Knee Preservation Expert Forum is an accurate summary of knee preservation: it not only marks an advancement in the concept and technology of joint surgery treatment, but also a modern interpretation of the ancient health wisdom of “the body and hair are given by parents, and we dare not damage them”, reflecting the orthopedic surgeons’ unremitting pursuit of minimally invasive, precise and personalized treatment. Today, China’s knee preservation surgery volume ranks among the top in the world, and many patients have regained their health and hope. The development of knee preservation surgery is a powerful proof of the equal emphasis on Chinese orthopedic medical progress and humanistic care.
Director Huang Ye, the person in charge of the Knee Preservation Surgery Department, said that after its establishment, the Knee Preservation Surgery Department will adhere to the concept of stepped treatment and be committed to the early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment of knee diseases. According to the different stages of the patient’s knee disease, the treatment strategy that best suits the patient’s needs and conditions is given, striving to promote the patient’s rehabilitation and functional recovery while minimizing damage. In addition, the Knee Preservation Surgery Department will also give full play to the core role of the National Orthopedic Medical Center and lead the sustainable development of the National Orthopedic Medical Center Knee Preservation Alliance. Closely cooperate with the members of the Knee Preservation Alliance across the country to jointly build a comprehensive development platform integrating medical care, teaching, and research, work together, and systematically and large-scale promote the concept and technology of knee preservation, cultivate more professional talents, and contribute to the steady development of my country’s knee preservation cause.
At the founding ceremony, Secretary Li Yumei and President Jiang Xieyuan jointly expressed their expectations. They said that the functional departments of the hospital should work closely together to provide strong support for the development of knee preservation surgery. They hope that the knee preservation surgery department can grow steadily and gradually become a leading domestic and internationally renowned department, so that more patients can benefit from knee preservation treatment with Chinese characteristics. At the same time, they also expect the knee preservation surgery department to actively share China’s experience and promote the exchange and dissemination of Chinese-style knee preservation concepts and technologies internationally.
